Post Post subject: Detecting connection speed Reply with quote

In my university, I have high speed internet connection but I don't know what type of connection it is. I can't check the settings as these are protected by administrator password. Is there any way I can find out what type of links the university uses ?

Thanks.

In a process like this what is usually done is, the university leases a high bandwidth service from some ISP. The university has it's own LAN (local area network) that usually includes all the class, office, library computers etc. Everyone in the LAN connects to the server and server authenticates the user and if he has enough authorization he can access the internet from the LAN. This routing is directed by the server and obviously you can not know about the actual configuration. But it is fairly simple to guess using common sense. If you are living and going to school from a developed country, and the university is fairly large, it has leased a few T1 lines or a T3 line. A full T1 line can connect at 1,544k and costs only about 600 us dollars per month. Whereas, a T3 line can transmit data at 44.746 Megabits per second (Mbps). But it's much much more costly.

Another way to find out about the university network is do some good hearted hacking with the university domain names, mail server etc.

I remember telneting into our university's mail server and then send email from clinton@whitehouse.gov lol. Such things are getting trickier though these days.
Hope that helps. Now if you'd tell us the exact purpose of the information, we could help you better.

I tried to find the exact connection type of my uni but couldn't figure it out

Anyway, I'm trying to setup yahoo messenger on one of my uni computer. the proxy server address is 193.60.136.6 and the name of the proxy is ticstudproxy1.tic.ac.uk. I guess the port number is 8080 but not sure. Is there any way to know the proxy settings from dos (as I can't do it from windows for admin password )

Also in YM setup it shows HTTP and SOCKS settings. On which one I put my proxy settings?

edit : forgot to say the uni also uses a firewall

MasterMind,

Best solution is that, you ask the helpdesk operator about this and ask him/her to help you.
But if uni rules don't allow you to setup yahoo chat client, then you shouldn't do that. After all, a quality IT professional should respect IT rules and regulations.

lol...was that really DK speaking ???

Well...the uni doesn't say EXPLICITELY that we can't setup any chat clients...is it a good enough excuse

Setting up the proxy with numeric server address and correct port with HTTP should work.

Now you can just ask your admin about the proxy port ur computer is connecting to.

But if you must take the hard way, here it goes.

Open DOS from run-cmd
Type: ipconfig -all

This will ouput the server address and configurations.

Now for the port:

netstat

Just the netstat command without any flag.

Under foreign address it will show the port along with he name server.
Something like this:
ticstudproxy1.tic.ac.uk:3452

Hope that works. Keep us posted.

Thanks Mr. cloudconstructor...

It seems that I have no other choice but to take the hard way... (whoops wrong emoticon...ah..here it is )

I'll inform about the progress later.
