Post operating system, hardware, popular software tips and tricks that you stumble upon:

Here is something to begin with:

Setting the screen saver to a DOS prompt (only tested in XP home)

a. Make a copy of C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe and rename it (prompt.scr) and place it in the syste32 directory...

b. Now open display properties (right click on desktop) now select the screen saver tab, now click on the dropdown menu "prompt" should be displayed if not restart your computer for the changes to take effect, then apply the screen saver it will popup when you hit apply.

c. Now instead of loading a screen saver your computer will open a DOS prompt, you can also change the logon screen saver

Post Post subject: Print Out a Directory Listing in Windows Reply with quote

Print Out a Directory Listing

Works For
Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows Me
Windows 98
Windows 95

Although there is no built-in way to print a directory listing (all the filenames in a folder), there is a way to add this functionality to Windows. Here's how you do it:

1. Open a text editor, such as Notepad, and type the following lines into a new document: (assuming the printer you wish to use is connected to printer port #1).

CD %1
DIR >LPT1
2. Save the two-line file into your Windows\Command folder, and call it PRINTDIR.BAT.
3. Find the file in Explorer, right click on it, and select Properties.
4. Click on the Program tab, turn on the Close on Exit option, choose
5. Minimized from the Run list, and click Ok.
6. Next, run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
7. Open My Computer\ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ Directory\ shell.
8. Select New from the Edit menu, and then select Key.
9. Type Print for the name of this new key, and press Enter.
10. Highlight the new Print key, select New from the Edit menu, and then select Key again.
11. Type command for the name of this new key, and press Enter.
12. Double-click on the (default) value in the right pane, and type C:\Windows\Command\PRINTDIR.BAT (assuming that C:\Windows\ is your Windows folder).
From now on, when you right-click on a folder icon, you can click Print to print its contents.

Note: this assumes that your printer is connected to the LPT1 port, which is true for most users. However, if your printer is connected over a network or you have more than one printer, you need to change LPT1 to the correct port.

Post Post subject: Create a custom Find toolbar in Windws Reply with quote

Tired of looking for files via Windows Explorer? Create a custom toolbar for it.

Right Click any blank spot on your desktop toolbar. Navigate to Toolbars|New Toolbar.

Navigate to your C: drive (or any other drive or folder you'd like).
Left Click it once to highlight it and click OK.

Your C: drive is now on your desktop toolbar. Click the double arrows >> to expand it and navigate through it like you do your start menu.

Here are two very good windows or internet explorer tips I think.

In IE 5.5 or above:

Type the name of a website into the address bar then press Ctrl and Enter. Windows will automatically put [http://www.] before it and .com afterwards.
Example:

Type "quantumcloud" into the address bar

Press Ctrl and Enter

Thie will automatically take you to [http://www.quantumcloud.com/]

In IE 5.5 or above:
Winkey + U will open up a text to speech narrator. Here is what it does:

Quote:
Narrator overview:
Narrator is a text-to-speech utility for users who are blind or have impaired vision. Narrator reads what is displayed on your screen: the contents of the active window, menu options, or the text you have typed.

Narrator is designed to work with Notepad, Wordpad, Control Panel programs, Internet Explorer, the Windows desktop, and Windows setup. Narrator may not read words aloud correctly in other programs.

Narrator has a number of options that allow you to customize the way screen elements are read.

You can have new windows, menus, or shortcut menus read aloud when they are displayed.
You can have typed characters read aloud.
You can have the mouse pointer follow the active item on the screen.
You can adjust the speed, volume, or pitch of the voice.
The accessibility tools that ship with Windows are intended to provide a minimum level of functionality for users with special needs. Most users with disabilities will need utility programs with more advanced functionality for daily use.

Open Narrator.

Notes

To open Narrator, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Accessibility, and then click Narrator.
To open Narrator using the keyboard, press CTRL+ESC, press R, type narrator, and then press ENTER.
Narrator is not available for all languages and is only supported on the English version of Windows XP. Web addresses can change, so you might be unable to connect to the Web site or sites mentioned here.
An easy way to start Narrator is to press the Windows logo key () + U. Narrator is set to start by default when Utility Manager starts. However, Narrator may not start if your computer does not have text-to-speech program capability.
Utility Manager enables users to check an Accessibility program's status and start or stop an Accessibility program. Users with administrator-level access can designate to have the program start when Utility Manager starts. Users can also start Accessibility programs before logging on to the computer on by pressing the Windows logo key () + U at the Welcome to Windows dialog box that appears when Windows starts.

Post Post subject: How to Disable the windows xp Splash Screen: Reply with quote

How to Disable the windows xp Splash Screen

Want to know what windows xp is doing behind that fancy splash screen?

Right click My Computer
Select Properties then click on the Advanced tab.
Next click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Click Edit
You'll need to edit this file "BOOT.INI"
Add /SOS right after /fastdetect with a space between them.

The line should look something like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional" /fastdetect /SOS

After you restart, the splash screen should be gone! You can set it back simple by removing the /SOS switch.
There you go. Your computer looks much more like a computer geek now!

Post Post subject: Shifting through windows Reply with quote

ALT-SHIFT-TAB to go backwards through apps like Alt-tab does!

SHIFT-TAB to scroll backwards through tabbed items, whatever they may be. This works in virtually every app. So when I accidentally try to make an indent in this reply box and the selection goes down to the submit button, I hit shift-tab and it comes back up here so I can continue!

To increase the maximum number of simultaneous downloads in IE from the default of 3.
