Post Post subject: Read any good book lately? Post your favorite books, Reviews Reply with quote

I am a very avid reader. I have been reading, reading and reading since I am a little kid. And sometimes I find myself stuck not knowing what to read next. Which is very irritating. So if anyone is reading anything interesting or have read anything interesting...please post here. So that others can try them.

Please state briefly a review on the book and not just the name. So that others can know what they are getting into.

its a great topic you started in here. i have been reading too. reading is what keeps me wake. as i found the word "walk with knowledge and you will never be alone" so assuring my lonely life.

i read a book and finished that one just a few days or week ago. it is great but i don't know you will find it near you or not. you can try though.

the title is "silence no more" by paul findley, a US house of representative.
the book talks about his 25 years of experience in the world of Islam during his life.

the book was written to confront the false image of islam in America. it talks about the thoughts that people have and their attitude toward islam and how wrong some of the information and how media is making this religion stupid of all and at the end it encurages people to learn about it and fix their thoughts and also give tips for people who wants to work on that part to make this religion clear to others and to fix the stereotypes and so on.

i found it very great since i hear too much bad stuffs about it. another ting i found great is that he actually presented the books as diary in which he share his life and talks about people he met and people who converted to islam and so on.

maybe you won't like it but it is worth knowing something that is being kicked out of the way everyday life without trying to know what it is.
so good luck

Post Post subject: Why do people believe in weird things? Reply with quote

Thanks Rainy for your suggestions. I like your new name. And also very surprised that you'd know of my choice reading, and if I would read your book or not. Anyway, I agree that people who believe in some kind of religion has no right to lok down upon another one. All religions are basically the same stuff dressed in different language. Some are more sophisticatedly described than others. That's all.

I don't think, I will have a chance to read the book you suggested.

Anyway, in the similar attitude, I can suggest a book that contrasts with your choice. I read it some time ago. But it was a good read.

"Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time"

You can read some sample pages from the bookHERE.

It's nothing particularly about religion though. But a healthy approach at analysing why people would believe in things like, Holocaust denial and creationism, abductions, Satanism, Afrocentrism, near-death experiences, Randian positivism, and psychics.

thanks for your offer, i will try.

i think you will like this one though "tuesday with morrie" by mitch album.
i read long ago quite. it is a philosophy kind of book by a sociology teacher. good chain right. sociology teacher's philosophy.

the story is kind of boring at the beginning but it is great as you move on. a non-fiction book by mitch, the student of morrie from sociology class and long time later they meet each other, they are good friend.
tuesday is day when they used have class and this is their last project when morrie is on death bed, sharing all his knowledge with us all before dying.

mitch and morrie both worked for this book on tuesday until the death day. the book talks about all parts of life in a philosophical way. i found it very interesting.

if you like to read it, then do so, you may enjoy it. or maybe not, since not everyone likes everything.

i think you won't like some other books i will offer such as "a farewell to arms" and also "angelas ashes" these are the two books i read like month and half ago.

second one i was tired of but first one i liked quite. first one is about world war 1, a fiction though. about a couple's love story and so on. and second one, not so nice but okay. it is about the authore frank childhood. his life was horrible i think so. i didn't like it. i was tired of hearing "jesus oh! mother God" i read it too much that it just came out of my head after 15 days of finished. the book mostly took place in ireland and at the beginning it was in USA.

another book, "a hope in the unseen" this is a great book i would say and then i would say too, i was tired of it. it is about a black boy who was so excellent student and grew up in a very poor family. it is good but at the end it wasn't so interesting to me so i was tired of it.

here so many books, i think you will like tuesday with morrie, that one is nice really.
okay
bye.

Post Post subject: Remarque and post world war novels Reply with quote

I will of course try to get hold of a copy of the book.

I think, we hit a common point here. A farewell to arms, was something I liked. I read that so very long ago. But it was good. Needless to say what a great writer hemingway is. Though I can't say this was his greatest creation. How about the famous old man and the sea or for whom the bell tolls? Funny thing is I remember the book, not because of it. But because of the theme it presented. It got me interested in books with similar themes. And I read a few along the line. And I remember all of them now vividly because I met Erich Maria Remarque. I was so moved by The Road back, All quiet on the western Front and Three Comrades. All these books dealt with 1st world war scenerio and characters. The Road Back was perhaps the most tragic. All quiet on the western front was perhaps, the most captivating. And Three Comrades was perhaps the most romantically tragic of the bunch.

Anyway, if you liked the Farewell to Arms...IMO these three books are much more powerful representative of that era and much better written than anything else. Remarque touches the human heart in the most sophisticated ways. His writing style is gifted.

Post Post subject: Free sci fi ebook by duncan long, wrong side in Reply with quote

IMO = In my opinion
similarly IMHO = In my humble opinion

They are just very popular shortcuts.

The book I mentioned earlier(why people believe in weird things) was read some time ago. Not now. The latest book that I read was a light sci fi. Wrong Side In by Duncan Long. As I said, it's light reading. And I immensely enjoyed reading it. All the techy computer stuffs that I like. With the added lure of action. The suspense was good, the writing style awesome.

Quote:
Novel Synopsis: In the not-too-distant future, Ralph is a petty crook that finds himself in trouble, way over his head. Government goons and "Death" are after him, trying to locate an ancient man who holds the fate of the world in his virtual hands. Meanwhile Ralph battles for his life while slowly discovering that the new drug he often uses has side effects that are putting him in the middle of a deadly game for the control of Earth. Lots of science fiction and fantasy action, and more than a few chuckles in a world where machines and the government regularly run amuck.

It's a free e-book. You can download it from Duncan Lon's website

thank you your highness.

i am not good at shortcut stuffs and don't know much of them either.

you like those books. i actually never read much science fiction books because i get scare with the front page picture. those pictures are sure scary and wired. so, i don't bother to take.

well, i will try to read some of the books you mentioned though. i like technology stuffs very much. i like actually movies, like the one SPY KIDS, and CODY BANKS and SMART HOUSE and some others. those are great technology computer world movie for kids. but i like them. those are cool with those stuffs.

the book you mentioned was long time ago, so, i won't find it near me. if not fine. i just missed it. the one you mentioned here now, i didn't get the tittle of it though. is it "wrong side in" by Duncan long. if so, i will look for it.

did you read bronte books, you know those three bronte sisters, charley, and so on. i forgot those names.
i didn't read but i saw two of those sisters movies. one whethering heights and jane eyer.
those are really great movies i would say books too. but the books are too long. yet you can try if you like though. those are great love story.

so have fun. do you read books over online or buy or borrow them from library or so?
i just went to your site to check the book.
thank you.
it is good to share this book stuffs. when i read a book and i like it. i always ask my sisters to read but they don't really like to read these books much. sometimes they do, like "a farewell to arms" one of my sister read it. it is a great book but has a very sad ending though.

okay bye

Very interesting. Why didn't you tell me before about this Quantum? I could drop a ton ob books on this topic. . Ok first of all I like to say you brought my school memories back. Thoses books were more than books. Those were vision, dream, love, anger and sometimes being a hero. Currently, I'm not reading anything. Few months before I read "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mendela. A must read book. I will give you(quantum) a copy of that next week. I've that in my home. I think you will love it. I need to take few books from you.

Bah DK,

Not that I was hiding this thread from yea. You are very right DK. Those books meant many things! Those books defined so much of me. My dreams, expectations from life, my ambitions! My picture of Mrs. right (for me). lol.

umm ummm lemme sing a song

I remember a time
My frail, virgin mind
Watched the crimson sunrise
Imagined what it might find
Life was filled with wonder
I felt the warm wind blow
I must explore the boundaries
Transcend the depth of winter's snow

Innocence caressing me
I never felt so young before
There was so much life in me
Still I longed to search for more

At different stages of my life I owned many books. The total should have been above 200. But now I don't own more than 10 fiction books. How sorry is that?

lol. It's true. I don't understand though how come some of the great novels come up with that kinda crap cover pictures. May be you should try not looking into the cover picture and read the back cover only.

Did'nt see cody banks. But I loved the animation they did with the Spy Kid Game Over. Awesome.

Those books may be old. But they are classic and most libraries should have them.

You can download the Wrong Side in from here:

lol. I don't like Love stories in general. But Thre Comrades was different. Oh it was different. The character building was so awesome, it just makes you feel like him/her. You can actually feel the protagonists' pain, love, and expectations. You can identify yourself with him/her. Such was the power of his story telling. It was no longer a fictional story told by a stranger. The emotions he describes are the ones actually flowing inside of you.

I try to deploy all three methods.

i don't like love stories at all almost, i hardly read those type of love stories. you are very right about the comments you gave about that book. we actually watched it in class to analyze it and study it just as you described. these are very old books and also the one "scarlet letter" it is a good book too but quite old.

Cody banks is new movie and there are two movies out. we saw both of them. you will love those movies, great movies with all those technological stuffs and computer stuffs. i just love them.

i am just wondering how do they make those stuffs. i wish i could make some of those things and full my house and life with those stuffs.

your song is like poem since we can't hear the music with it, and melody.
