Post Post subject: Does Google Yahoo robots read Flash sites? Reply with quote

Here is a question that I have been thinking of asking you guys for some time. Can google or yahoo search engine bots read the flash swf files that we embed in the websites? Can it read the text and links to other sites? Or read and index the links to movie clips and their texts? Anyone knows anything on it?

I see that most people are little confused about it. They think that even if google starts doing that it will not be very good. This may be true. Considering that Flash websites are mostly about animation, multimedia gimmick than text information. So even when Google can read and index Flash files there is not much to index anyway! As the google guy says:

Historically, I've been mildly skeptical about the information content of Flash files (e.g. there's not usually straight text in there; it's more like characters/words plus paths and such, as folks here know, and the prior probability of high information content is probably lower than say .pdf), but I figure it can't hurt to have the capability to read swf, and then down the road we can see how it affects relevance. Just my personal take on it, of course; bear in mind that I haven't talked to the person who was looking at Flash.

I think, it might be a good idea for webmasters to offer an HTML version of their Flash site, if they must use Flash. What do you think?

Agreed....But this will be better if google start that...cause with in short future the problem of indexing flash can be solved. Maybe Flash content can be read from the outside source!!! Cause, programmers always trying to find the easiest way of anythings.

if search engines owners are using
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/download/search_engine/index.html
then no worries for flash developers.

I am not sure if google use Search Engine SDK by Macromedia for reading/indexing flash files.

I think, in that forum the Google Guy (seems to be a google employee) says that Google is not using that SDK from Macromedia. If they tried to read Flash file, they would be using their own technology. Other search engines might be using that. Who knows. Even if google can read swf files, I think they will be given less value. And you lose pages too. Would google count a link to load another movie as a different page? i don't think so.
