First of all we need to know what is your computer background..I mean what is your skills with the related softwares...like Photoshop, Illustrator, Combustion, Premiere, AVID or After FX. Do you know any of these softwares? If the Answer is yes..then how expert you are in these softwares?

And for Buildings making...you can follow MAX only....Cause Maya is really Huge and Huge software for the professionals and ofcourse for the industrial use. It is use for actually in Film production or where need exactly realistic effects.
If you think that, you want to be a 3D modeller only then you can start from MAX or if you wanna be a 3D for all..then must go for maya..don't waste your time. Hope with in 10 years you gonna rock with this software.
And you also have to look other 3D software too...when you will expert in maya.

Comeon hasnat. Must you try to scare away a newbie? abrintod, it's not that hard. How could something that works almost entirely on GUI be so hard? It's nothing like programming where things are abstract. All the tools are in front of you. You will definitely need a few things though. Creativity, powerful hardware, and patience. Look at Hasnat. He is wasting away 1/5th of his life just tryingto learn one software.

But if you wanna go slow, I say start with Bryce. The easiest of the 3d softwares. You will get a feel of the 3d world and also get the joy of instant creation.

For that building thing, it's noithing more than actually modelling any architecture from the scratch. Maya,3ds Max, or lightwave all are capable of that. So you can learn any of them. They all have powerful object modelling tools. But 3ds max and Maya both are for almost the same job. So if you want to really get deep, go to either one, not both. That'd be wasting of time.

Maya Bible can be a good start for a beginner.
