Sounds like Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Perhaps many people just can't get past the most basic needs or don't want to.
I happen to follow a religion. The premise of my religion is to question why. Our book of scripture ends with a verse that encourages its reader to ponder the the works of the scripture and to determine for one's self if it is truth.
Let's put things into perspective. Our life on earth is fleeting. To focus our existance on the accumulation of worldly things becomes more and more pointless the more we realize how small we are in this galaxy and how short our existance is here.
I for one, don't see much point to anything if there isn't a continuation of life after this one. Anyone here believe in a continuation of yourself after mortality? Just curious.

Hmm...I wonder how encouraged you feel? And how far you pondered. I remember, once sending you the explanation of an ethical atheist. You never bothered to read it.

So will we each be the sole owner of one galaxy each with many sub-human beings under us to govern, if haven and hell was true?

Even if what you say is true(which it is not) and there is an infinite life ahead of us after this life, why would we slack or discard the fleeting happiness that this life has to offer, and not work hard accordingly to have that fleeting happiness? Should we stop brushing our teeth then, because what's the use of this teeth in the next world? 'Cause if we do, then we will soon find out how painful dental ache could be. Now you don't wanna go us through that pain, do yea?

Count one vote against.

"I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? All beings so far have created something beyond themselves; and do you want to be the ebb of this great flood and even go back to the beasts rather than overcome man? What is the ape to man? A laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. And man shall be just that for the overman: a laughingstock or a painful embarrassment... Behold, I teach you the overman. The overman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: the overman shall be the meaning of the earth! I beseech you, my brothers, remain faithful to the earth, and do not believe those who speak to you of otherworldly hopes!"
Now if you will excuse me, I will be listening to the Voices from the Dream Theater. It has good things to say about judeo-christian culture. And since you are listeing to DT too, you should check out the Voices Lyrics-2nd thread on this forum. _________________

You bet I was encouraged to find out the truth. As much as you I would presume. I have read several books written in direct offense to my religion and have come to my own conclusion. And, I have read the explanation of the ethical athiest.

Some people are satisfied with this purpose of life you speak of. I don't believe that I could ever be.

For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

You did after all! You never commented on it.

What unnatural words from the mouth of a capitalist?
To be quite honest, the main reason for my pursuit of riches is to support a family, a BIG one. And hopefully if I can obtain true financial freedom, I may not have to work anymore and can focus all my time on the most important things. I certainly can't take any money with me when I die.
I do see how someone may be content to succeed in life and master him/herself and gain satisfaction in life from this. I just don't think I could be truly satisfied by this alone.
