Personally, I think, this privacy fear is quite baseless. Google never hid the fact that it was going to scan your email. The fact is that the scan is done through automated bots to serve relevent text adverts. Not human beings. With free emails you get ads anyway. Isn't it better to see relevent ads rather than random ones? You might see something useful outta those. Besides, I don't see what secret messages normal people could be sending back and forth that would make google specially interested in reading one's email particularly out of billions that must be going through the sytem everyday. If you are so concerned about online privacy then set up your own hosting company, register your own dimain, set up your own email server. Otherwise, it is quite a useful service for normal people. And seeing ads is a very small price to pay for that service.
