Privacy issue concerning Gmail

As it looks to me.. a lot of people in this forum are quite excited about this gmail invitation thing. Now, this gmail invitation I think brings up a very touchy issue to our internet community. That is the issue of your online PRIVACY.

I would like to know how you guys feel about it -violation of your privacy through information gathering while you are surfing online or in this case when you are using gmail, by "sniffing" through your personal messages.

Given the fact that I'm online almost all the time except when I am sleeping, it's absolutely irritating to have the feeling that someone is prying on me.

Does anybody know what google did about the privacy issues surrounding gmail. I 'm not up-to-date about it. Last thing i've read was that CA legislature was passing a law regarding this.

So, one thing for sure is that just because it's from google I am not gonna be bought into gmail until I know that they are not "sniffing" into my messages.

I would like hear from you guys about your thought in privacy issues.

You're right. I'm feeling that from last 2 weeks, before that I didn't notice that issue. While I was searching university information and subscribe a newsletter from a site for scholarship information, after few minutes when I received a mail from them and opened it, I saw related advertisement such as different universities and student loan offering firms at the right side of the mail. That's mean google is reading my whole mail from top to bottom. This concern violation of privacy. I think best idea is buying own domain as it's really cheap. I did several search and found that a lot of people are concern about it.

How do you sure about that, Google read your mail for that pupose..it might because of the subscription too..cause Universities always sell information to other or taken by other.

Personally, I think, this privacy fear is quite baseless. Google never hid the fact that it was going to scan your email. The fact is that the scan is done through automated bots to serve relevent text adverts. Not human beings. With free emails you get ads anyway. Isn't it better to see relevent ads rather than random ones? You might see something useful outta those. Besides, I don't see what secret messages normal people could be sending back and forth that would make google specially interested in reading one's email particularly out of billions that must be going through the sytem everyday. If you are so concerned about online privacy then set up your own hosting company, register your own dimain, set up your own email server. Otherwise, it is quite a useful service for normal people. And seeing ads is a very small price to pay for that service.
