Help needed with a file transfer application

Hello Im new to this forum, I was wondering if anyone could help me. i have made a user interface in Vb and I have succesfully linked it to Oracle 9.

I would like to show the posiblitys of File retrival via a file transfer aplication designed in java.

The application needs to send a string to a server specifing a file name, then the server opens the file and reads it with the file and its contents are sent to a user located anyweare on a local net work

If anyone has any solution please could you help me as im new to java. And some of the books im reading are not very clear or are just confusing me

do you just want to download a file from Web site(not using ftp)?
