Windows installation

Hi,

I have two questions with windows right now. The first one is, last week my friend bought a new hard drive and wanted me to install windows xp pro for her. I had a cd (bootable) which contained different version of windows. When I went to the xp folder and typed setup, it said "this program cannot be run under dos" !!! After failing different attempts, I installed win98 first then used windows explorer to run xp setup and upgraded from there. But I am not happy with this solution. There must be a way to install xp from scratch. How do you install win xp pro to a new hard drive ?

The second question is I have windows home edition (sp2) on my computer. I want to install xp pro. But when I try to install, it says older version and cannot be installed. I guess the xp pro I have doesn't have sp2 and perhaps thats why its reporting as older version. How can I install xp pro in my computer then ?

For the first problem you need to boot with the bootable XP CD. It seems your CD was 98 bootable. I might be wrong. But with a bootable XP i never had such problem. I partitioned, formatted, and installed XP with a bootable XP cd.

For second problem, I don't suppose there is a way with microsoft to go back to a previous version of windows. You will have to format and do a clean install.
