Post Post subject: How to host a website Reply with quote

Hello everyone,

Nice to see this site back again Gentle smile (Although its a bit quiet than before )

I have designed a simple website using dreamweaver. Its my first web design for one of my uncle's travel agency in BD. Right now, its a very simple static design but I have plans to make it an attractive one and add dynamic contents later.

I'll be visiting BD this summer and want to publish this website. But, I don't know anything about web hosting. So, the question is, how do I get a webaddress and upload my stuff from BD ? How do I select a hosting company? What things do I need to know when selecting a host ? What could be the price ? How will I manage my site if once I upload it ? etc. etc. etc.

As I said before, I don't know anything about web hostings and procedures.

Any help from anyone ???

Thanks :)

Great to have you back too.

To make your web site live you will need two things. Get a domain registered and host it. Both require international debit/credit card. If you can arrange someone to let you use their card you can register a domain from godaddy.com or itsyourdomain.com etc. After you buy the domain find a hosting package with a reputable company that suits your need. Make your payment online, go to your domain registration account and point your name server to your host's server.

If you can't use the credit card then the only way is to go to a web solution company in BD and have them buy for you. You pay them, they register your domain. Then you can host with the same company. Quantumcloud does this, though we do it mainly for our design clients who want complete solutions. But we can help you there. I think, hasnut does this too and we worked with web bangladesh before, which provided good service.

The only thing you get to be careful about for small site like yours is that your hosting server is up more than 99% of time. Most bangladeshi hosts do not live up to that because they try to be over cheap and themselves buy cheap reseller accounts and naturally experience much down time. So my honest advise don't try to buy a package that is over cheap. If you buy your ownself, expect to pay 3.99-7.99/month for good service and customer support. For a BD company the cost would be 2500-3500/year for a reasonably good service.

Once your domain is pointed to the proper server, you can upload files using FTP. SmartFTP and WSFTP are 2 of the most popular ones. Simply login to your server acct with the FTP user name and password and upload the whole site with the directory strucure intact. You are done.

Have fun in Bangladesh!

Just as Quantum said, you first have to pick out a domain name that suites your needs. Then, you have to select a hosting company and a hosting package that suites your needs. Once you sign up with the hosting company, they will provide you with nameservers. You have to setup your domain to point to the hosting company's servers (using the nameservers). If you have trouble with that, the host should assist you.

It may take up to 48 hours for your domain to properly point to the host's servers. Until then, you can access your site using the IP address of the server (ex. 69.33.44.554)

You can also use the IP address to publish your site using either FTP (as Quantum mentioned, SmartFTP and wsFTP are pretty good) or using dreamweaver's publish feature.

Hope that helps.

[Quick edit:] You may want to look at spending upwards of $7/month to find a reliable hosting company. Of course there are cheaper hosts out there that offer a good service, but they are few and far between.
