The main limitations of linux or any other OS except for windows is that they are unable to run many popular softwares, example is the 800 pund gorilla of 2d image editing software Pshop. It will take a long time for those OSes to match windows' number of popular and powerful softwares. It may not even be realized.
In the mean time, users of linux can make use of a middleware to run softwares like Pshop and even Ms Office(  )in linux. CrossOver is one such application. Here is a review link:

Quote from product features:
"Run popular office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes, in Linux, without any Microsoft OS license costs.
CrossOver Office allows you to install your favorite Windows productivity applications in Linux, without needing a Microsoft Operating System license. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing a Windows application simple and fast.
Once installed, your application will integrate directly with your Gnome or KDE environment. Just click and run your application, exactly as you would in Windows, but with the full freedom of Linux."
