Seeking recommendation for internet provider in Gulshan

Hi everyone,

I live in the USA and am going to be spending a few months in Dhaka, Gulshan to be specific. I need to find an affordable yet good internet connection so that I can access my employer's network back here in the USA. I am hoping I can find something that gives a reliable 256 or 512 kbps. Can anyone recommend a good ISP fro the Gulshan area?

I have seen a few web sites, such as Sirius Broadband's Zip Fiber Optic Network, Dhaka Broadband Network's SpeedNet, Bangladesh Online Limited (BOL), Grameen Cyber Net, Spark Online... (Don't wanna post links since i'm not sure if that would be considered advertising.) Does anyone have good/bad experiences with those? Some don't seem to specify what speed the connection is so I am not sure how reliable the connection will be (do they dip drastically during peak hours?).

From our personal experience if you are looking for dedicated connection, either Zip, Dhakacom or Alap would be one of your best choices. 512 kbps duplex would cost you about 60k BDT/month. If you are ready to pay that kind of money, you are good to go with either one of the three.

Please consider the security concerns from Bangladesh. Foreign companies do restrict rdc or ssh connections from abroad. It can be a vpn protection or ssl.

What happens from bd is, networks and servers are not properly configured for rdc or ssh dealings out bd. As a result, you will be completely helpless over there.

It is possible to have reliable connection over there, but reliable access, I doubt. My brother went there from the US for three weeks and failed to rdc to the outside world. It is true that he was less prepared and was hoping for a fast connection only. He had to pay for it.

Just wanted you to take some issues under consideration before you get there.
