Post Post subject: Virus in the network! Reply with quote

I run xp. Some times I have to use pre paid dial up. It happens so that sometimes, xp goes to shut down with an error message like Remote Procedure Call has....etc etc. Then there is a one minute count down before windows shuts down. I think some of you have seen this message. No, I do not have ms blast. I have service pack 2 installed and most other recent patches too. I followed the instructions on micro$oft sites too.

What could be the cause then? Since it happens only during dialing up, and RPC is a network fucntion...can the ISP I am calling to actually has the problem? Can it have a virus sending nasty packages that causes a page fault? Any insights people?

Quamtum,

Download the patch and scan your drive:
http://www.norman.com/Virus/Virus_removal_tools/11359

If that doesn't work do the following:
Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Open that up and click on Standard tab, scroll down to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)and right click on it. Select Properties and then Recovery tab. Drop down all menus and change to "Take No Action".

Nice DK. I did both, just to be on the safe side. The first one was probably unnecessary, because it did'nt find anything after scanning the drive. I will know if it works next time I have to resort to the dial up.

The second fix to modify the RPC's properties to no action definitely works. I am certain now. Thank you sir!
